The Bahamian spiny lobster is the most economically important seafood in the Bahamian Seafood Industry. This nocturnal species inhabits coral reefs where it hides during the day in crevices under ledges. It grows to about 60 cm in length and lacks the large pinching claws of their Maine lobster relatives. It is highly regulated and carefully monitored to protect its sustainability.
The minimum legal tail size of spiny lobsters is 5.5” and non-fishing of the species is between April 1st and July 31st annually. Catching or harvesting egg bearing Spiny Lobsters, undersized lobster tails, and fishing outside of the official lobster season are all serious criminal offenses and can lead to heavy fines and possible jail time.
Spiny Lobsters are the number one seafood product exported from the Bahamas and provides great economic benefits to the country as a whole. It is primarily exported to Europe (France), USA, and Canada.
Spiny Lobsters can be enjoyed in salads, steamed, broiled, and baked or fried.
