Snappers

Bahamian waters host an abundance of scaled fish; with snappers being the most popular. The three most popular snappers are lane, mutton, and red snappers.

Red snappers are usually fished by electric or hydraulic reels in water depths between 200’ and 600’ (feet).

Lane Snappers are found and fished commercially by cotton nets or fish pots in water depth of around 20’ to 40’ (feet) around sea grass beds, sandy banks, and coral reefs.

Mutton Snappers are caught mostly by hand line in water depths of 60’ to 300’ (feet) from May to July annually.

A favorite amongst Bahamians, the lane snappers are a preferred choice when it comes to meal selection. This popular fish is eaten on a daily basis at local fish frys, at the waterfront, or at the dinner table. There are numerous ways to prepare this fish but the most popular is fried or grilled. Snappers can be enjoyed whole or fillet.
