Conch

The Bahamian Queen Conch is a soft body type mollusk that is protected by a very hard shell and generally fished from among grassy bottoms between 20’ and 40’ (feet) in depth.

By virtue of its popularity and slow growth pattern (it usually takes about 3-5 years to reach full maturity), this Bahamian delicacy is highly regulated by the government in order to preserve its population and longevity.

Therefore if conch is caught and does not meet the required size it must be returned to its natural habitat. Juvenile conchs are closely protected to maintain the conch population.

The conch is of extreme economic importance to the Bahamian society and is one of the major bread winners for local fishermen.

According to locals the best way to eat conch is "raw" in salads and it is considered an aphrodisiac. Conchs can also be enjoyed in soups, stews, steamed, burger, fritters, and fried.
